Is Vodka Paleo

February 22, 2014 by mike 5 Comments

Technically no alcoholic beverages are paleo, but there are a few that are less harmful to your paleo diet/lifestyle if you do choose to continue drinking alcohol.  I personally still drink despite paleo since it is part of the social and networking world that I belong to and I like to drink wine with dinner for its health benefits.

Vodka is one of the best paleo alcohols, if you get the right one.

Most vodkas are made from other non-paleo ingredients like wheat, corn, grain, and rye.  Since vodka is a distilled spirits, and not brewed, the gluten should be non-existent in the final product, but you still have a risk of cross-contamination.

There are a few brands that make their vodka with paleo-friendly ingredients like coconut, potato, and grapes.

Final note – if you are going to drink vodka, watch your mixers as well.  Mix with club soda, lime juice, or coconut water before something like tonic or sugary fruit juices.

You don’t comment about Whey based vodkas at all. I assume they aren’t paleo either?

I’ve honestly never heard of “whey” vodkas. Can you give me a couple of brand examples? I’m going to say that I doubt they are paleo, though.

Is grass based vodka paleo? Zubrowka is gluten-free and is made from bison grass.

Wow I have never heard of that before. I’d imagine this would be another pseudo-paleo liquor so long as there aren’t any other ingredients used to process it that conflict with he paleo diet. But just remember, regardless of whether a vodka is paleo or not, too much of it is not paleo. It’s just getting drunk.
